THEMES

Totalitarianism

In Animal Farm the theme of totalitarianism is strongly illustrated. Totalitarianism is when the government of a country tries to control the minds and beliefs of the citizens along with the politics and economics. This is present in Animal Farm when Napoleon tries to make the other animals think that the Ten Commandments were always written with the exceptions he later makes. He is trying to control their minds into thinking what he wants.

Class Secularisation

In Animal Farm the theme of class secularisation is also mentioned quite often. In the novel, the pigs claim to make the farm an equal place for all animals. The farm develops ,though, into a place secularized by class and power. The pigs are in charge and therefore don't feel it's necessary for them to work. Meanwhile all of the other animals work long strenuous hours and barely have anough to eat.

Sophistication Makes it True

In Animal Farm the theme that sophistication makes it true is expressed clearly through Squealer's constant support of Napoleon. Squealer is able to embelish and make information very confusingly appealing to the other anminals. They don't understand sophisticated language so they think everything Squealer is sayingmust be true because it sounds so fancy.

Power Turns Humans Into Animals

In Animal Farm the theme that power turns humans into animals is prevalent near the very end of the novel. When all of the pigs and farmers are sitting around the table playing cards the other animals notice how the pigs are starting to resemble humans. This represents how humans start to develop qualities of animals' personalities when they get too caught up in power.
